Since 1948, the Khalifa family has been crafting exceptional ouds for musicians in Syria and around the world. Despite challenges in Syria, the family continues this tradition under the new name Zeryab Ouds, producing a wide range of instruments across various styles and price points. Vision: Zeryab combines traditional oud craftsmanship with modern innovation, blending unique ideas and advanced techniques. The third generation of Khalifa makers now leads the workshop, committed to preserving and enhancing the centuries-old art of oud making. Wood Preparation: All tonewoods are naturally dried. Trees are cut during winter (November–February) and stacked in ventilated warehouses in alternating layers, away from moisture and the ground. This process reduces wood moisture over about five years, depending on wood type and thickness, until it reaches 9–12%, ideal for instrument crafting. Sawmill Techniques: Direct sawing: Produces curved, oval patterns, enhancing the beauty of woods like cherry and walnut. Quarter sawing: Produces straight, striped patterns, ideal for mahogany, cedar, and cypress.
